Choosing the right curtain style for your home
Often overlooked or left to the last minute, curtains can make or break the design of a room just as much as furniture. Here’s some thoughts and explanations of curtain styles.
Pinch Pleat
Suitable for most fabric types, pinch pleats are hand sawn into a fabric and permanently fixed for a more luxurious, tailored look.
Wave
Fitted to a slim wave track, this type of pleat is simple and contemporary and will leave the fabric hanging in a regular, uniform fold.
Rod Gathered
Most suited to lightweight fabrics, this informal type of heading is best for curtains that are not used too often as opening and closing can damage the fabric pleat.
Goblet
For a formal and more traditional look, the goblet heading works well with thick fabrics or luxurious silks. It can be fitted to either a pole or track
Eyelet
Also known as a grommet heading, this contemporary look requires a pole. This fold is great for a lovely large regular pleat finish.

Pay attention to the drop length
Curtains that pool at the floor look glam but can become inconvenient if you are using them regularly. In rooms where you are frequently opening and closing curtains, I recommend a small gap between curtain and floor of 0.5 – cm.
Match Hardware
If you are using a pole, make sure it suits the style of your home and other hardware fittings used in the room. A more traditional style room may suit an antique brass pole, whereas a more contemporary finish can be achieved by using a Silent Gliss Metropole.
Consider a ceiling mount
In rooms without a cornice, a ceiling mount will look great for a contemporary look. These are especially useful in bedrooms as they limit light creeping into the room.
Off the shelf or custom made?
Bespoke made curtains offer many benefits such as customising sizes or a perfectly fitted suit. There are endless fabrics and design options to choose from including header style. However, with all these options there can be a considerable difference from an off the shelf option. If custom curtains are just not in your budget, then spending a little bit more on a high quality off the shelf will be the next best option.
